Sophia's Story

Sophia was one of the most critically injured and emotionally traumatised calves ever to arrive at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. Her fight for survival not only tested every skill of our veterinary and caregiving teams, but also deepened our understanding of the extraordinary emotional intelligence and resilience of rhinos. Her journey has shaped the way we care for orphans and she continues to inspire everyone who meets her.

Sophia’s life was torn apart in August 2018 when her mother was brutally poached in the Lower Sabie area of the Kruger National Park. At only five months old, she was still completely dependent on her mother for protection. Alone and frightened, we believe she tried to seek safety among another crash of rhinos, but the dominant bull injured her with his horn. By nightfall, hyenas had begun circling, and by dawn they had attacked her, leaving her with life threatening injuries.

Against all odds, Sophia was found in time. Rangers managed to drive off the hyenas, and on 16th August she was flown to Care for Wild by SANParks pilot Grant Knight and veterinarian Dr Peter Buss. On arrival, she was rushed into the ICU where Petronel and our veterinary team assessed the full extent of her wounds: deep bite marks on her face, ears, tail, and legs, as well as a severe abdominal puncture.

The next two months were critical. Sophia underwent multiple veterinary procedures and was placed on a specialised treatment plan. But her greatest wounds were not just physical. At night she cried out in distress, calling for the mother she had lost. Her grief was raw, and her trust in the world shattered. Our caregivers stood by her side every step of the way, not only treating her injuries but offering constant reassurance, comfort, and love. Slowly, Sophia’s body healed, and with time and patience, her spirit began to mend too.

The day she left ICU was unforgettable. Sophia was reunited with Milan, another orphan who had arrived the same day as Sophia. Their bond was instant and unbreakable, two young calves who had endured tragedy but found strength in each other. Later, Sparkle joined them in December 2018, and Sophia, now learning compassion through her own healing, was the first to comfort her.

Although Sophia made a remarkable recovery, her leg has occasionally troubled her with small abscesses caused by fragments of bone still working their way out, reminders of the brutality she survived. Yet her resilience has carried her forward into the next chapter of her journey: rewilding.
