RiRi's Story

On the 14th of August 2024, Care for Wild received an urgent call from Kruger National Park about a tiny, critically endangered black rhino calf who had been left orphaned. At just three months old, she was flown to the sanctuary by helicopter, arriving shortly after midday, fragile, frightened, and desperately in need of care. She was taken straight into the Intensive Care Unit, where Petronel and the veterinary team worked through the night to stabilise her.

Black rhino calves are particularly sensitive and require specialised care very different from white rhinos. They are known to bond deeply with a single caregiver, drawing comfort and security from that connection. For RiRi, that bond formed with Caregiver Lucas. His calm, steady presence became her anchor. By staying close, speaking softly, and moving gently, he gave RiRi the reassurance she so desperately needed. With Lucas by her side, the frightened calf began to take her very first steps toward healing.

To help her feel less alone, RiRi was also introduced to Bokkie, a gentle goat who became her constant companion. Black rhinos are browsers, just like goats, and the two quickly settled into a natural rhythm together. Where Lucas brought calm and safety, Bokkie brought playfulness and company at night. Between them, RiRi found both the comfort and the confidence she needed to begin her journey of recovery.
